Weeks:
Studio Documentation
Week 1 (27th Sep - 1st Oct)
The theme of my project is abstract art inspired by nature. Every time I start a project I research artists who create art with the same theme to take inspiration from.
I went to the take district this summer and had photos in my art gallery as well as taking photos of nature when I'm out and about. Already having primary photos to work with.

I created some experiments using acrylic paint and oil pastel on paper.

Abstract Experiments
In the first week, I decided to create abstract experiments on A3 paper on a whim. Personally, I have never put on paint on a piece of paper without planning out what to put on first. This was a challenge to do and fun. It forced me to problem solve along the way with colour and composition.
From looking at abstract expressionist artists they tend to go for circles and swirls since the shape is found most of all in nature.

I tried creating different sizes of circles. Starting with primary colours mostly red and blue then layering secondary colours that contrast with oil pastel which adds texture to the piece. I kept adding colours and shapes until I was satisfied with the composition.

These experiments were done quickly and around the same time when waiting for one to dry I would do the other.
I freely created swirls on the page using acrylic paint and adding contrasting colours and shapes with oil pastel which created dimension.
I feel the aim of swirls is to create movement in the piece.
It was very calming to do this piece as I was using fluid motions when creating it.
I wanted to create for fluidity in but in grayscale experiments. I found from previous use of work pen and pencil creates solid harsh lines and paint is hard to control and layer.
I experimented using charcoal very quickly to see how it would react to paper using only fluid swirls. It created the effect that I wanted, and I will continue to do more experiments with charcoal.
