Task 6: Publication Brief

Publish booklet DES200 - Grow Bigger

Booklet Ideas/Proposal:

Our booklet idea is a four-book series based on positive affirmations/quotes. Each book will start as a small booklet at A6; as you open each page, the bigger it will grow to extend into A3 as its full size. The concept is to make a booklet that easily fits into a pocket that can be read on the go. We will be making one booklet each within the group to create a variation of quotes. When the person finishes the booklet series, they can choose to place the A3 quotes as four posters. Our booklets have a dual purpose.

Created by Ana Coelho, Anna-Marie Gallares, Stephanie Cooper, and Chenyang Zhou.

  • We use brown and pink, blue and neon orange, blue and green, and light blue and orange.

  • Each page is a different colour text and alternates from the two colours chosen for the booklet.

  • We are using white A3 paper for booklets.

  • 4 Pages each booklet along with the front and back.

  • A6 grid created on a word doc or InDesign, then print and fold booklet.

  • Text font, size and style are still to be decided.

  • Quotes to be decided for final pages that also are turned into posters

Mockup of the booklet:

A3 paper folded four times to make A6 sized booklet. Every time book is opened, it is a page where a quote will be. Final page A3 will have the largest quote and be used as a poster.

Booklets will be a series put together with a paper book band. We plan to add the names of our group to the band as there is no room on the books. We want to make the booklets into one series, so taking ownership of one booklet defeats its purpose. Adding the names on the band would make it more professional and neat.

Mockup of cover for the booklet:

Ana made some cover designs as we didn't know how we wanted our booklet to look. With such a straightforward idea, we thought of adding natural leaves and flowers to signify growth linking to the physical growth of the booklet and the positive mental growth of the person.

Blurb for the back of the booklet:

A pocket positive affirmation booklet that will make you GROW BIGGER. Travel with this booklet and open up its pages with an open mind and a healing heart.

Layout in Indesign/ Test prints:

We made a layout on Indesign for the quotes, so they would be similar when printing the booklets. We kept the same format to do a quick exchange of quotes for the variations of booklets.

At the start, we couldn't decide what font to use. I chose a font that is clear and easy to read. We had two ideas; the first was to keep the same font but change the size as it folds bigger; the other was for the font to start thin and small, then grow larger and thicker; this would mean finding fonts that look similar but vary in thickness.

I printed out two versions of our idea. We looked at both and decided that going with the same font made the booklet more cohesive. Initially, we wanted to have different fonts for each booklet we individually made. However, we knew we wanted to use different colours, so we compensated to keep the font unchanged throughout the booklet series. We chose to use the font in the first layout for all the booklets.

Some of the quotes were placed upside down in the layout. When you open up the booklet, your position on how you're holding the booklet will not need to change. The original plan was for the booklet to rotate when opening each page, but we thought that would get very confusing for the reader. This positioning keeps the quotes verticle from start to finish.

We planned from the start in wanted to use the Risograph to create the different colours of the quotes. Each booklet will have two colours. I split the layout so that the two colours will alternate from the inside, and the front/back and final page will be the same colour.

We also thought of making the names of those who said the quote smaller than the quote itself with a dash, so it's clear.

280637512_1866859690167817_1689024105142066576_n.jpg

During the test prints, the colour variation changed. We had to cut the printed A3 so the quotes on the inside of the booklet will be one colour, and the cover/back and last quote will be the other colour.

We also found that some of the quotes didn't line up correctly when folded; the drawn design that we added was not in the middle. To keep the feeling of the front covers mocked up, we wanted to add back floral elements by drawing them to show individually in the four booklets. Initially, the front cover and last quote would have the same floral designs as they're the most visible part of the booklet, as the final quote can be repurposed as a poster. Doing the drawn floral designs made the printing process more complicated, so we decided to stick with plain text.

Final booklet prints/colourways:

We chose different colour combinations so no two booklets will have the same colours. Since they are so similar, the only difference visually is the colours used. There weren't many colours to choose from, and we wanted to avoid using black as we wished for the booklets to be colourful and using yellow as yellow is a hard colour to read for text.

The colours I chose are dark blue and neon orange. The other three booklets had colour combos of purple and green, brown and pink and orange and light blue.

Making the book band/ Final outcome:

We wanted our names on the book band as there's no space on the booklets themselves, so we wanted to add them on the book bands. I thought of adding tracing paper as a book band but adding the names at the back of the booklet, but our names can't be read because the book's blurb will be seen. So we decided to use coloured paper. Coloured paper doesn't allow the front cover to be seen, so we thought of handwriting the cover title onto the book band.

We placed this into the four booklets; we didn't like how it looked. Placing the book band like this and adding a handwritten title takes away the booklets' attention. We went back to using tracing paper but keeping it blank, letting the cover of the one booklet show and leaving out names.

Group/individual work:

  • Agree on a theme for the publication brief: Positive pocket booklet affirmations. (Ana, Anna-Marie and Stephanie)

  • Creating a physical mockup in paper of the booklets folding four times from A3 to A6 with a book band. (Anna-Marie)

  • Submitting and writing group proposal. (Stephanie)

  • To keep in contact, we used Facebook messenger - group chat made in Task 4

  • Changed the idea to having four booklets with four positive affirmations, and when the booklet is open can be turned into four poster sets. Everyone makes one booklet each instead of the original idea of 1 booklet with 16 positive affirmations. (Chenyang and Anna-Marie)

  • Write down quotes that we will use for each booklet. and four quotes each, making sure they vary from each other. (Everyone) - We used google docs to do this (Anna-Marie set up google docs).

  • Mockup designs for the front cover (Ana)

  • Writing booklet blurb - printed on the back of each booklet. (Anna-Marie)

  • Indesign A3 layout for quotes. The layout was used and copied to create consistency in placement, font and size of quotes. (Chenyang and Anna-Marie)

  • Printed experimental copies of booklets on Risograph. 2 colours were used for each booklet. Fixing the layout for colours. The decision to keep the booklet flower design free for a neater look. Printing final copies. (Ana and Chenyang)

  • Folding final copies and making book bands. Submitted booklets and folded individual copies to keep. (Stephanie and Anna-Marie)
