Personal Tutor: Ralph
Relevance:
What is your project? Outline what you are intending to do. What do you need to do in terms of
researching, preparing, collecting and making? List the things that will be relevant to help you start
developing your project. How does this area of practice relate to other historical and contemporary art
practices. (Maximum 150 words)

My project will be showing my personal experience of my first year of immigration from the Philippines to the UK as a young 7-year-old girl. I want to showcase it as a collection of paintings or wall installations with primary photographic source material of my childhood photographs and memory from my point of view. Highlighting the struggles to integrate into English society. I feel that immigration has always been depicted in historical and contemporary art. Art is always used to document and educate those who have never experienced extreme sacrifice for the good of their family. My project will be another addition to a personal story to which others with similar backgrounds can relate.
Knowledge:
Within the context of your project, which art theory best underpins your area of
practice? List 3 artists that share the same areas of interest for your project, in terms of ideas, making
processes, working practices, methodologies and choice of subject matter. Briefly explain why they
might be useful to you. What do you hope to learn from them? (Maximum 150 words)

The area of my practice mostly consists of painting where the intention of colour and text has meaning to inform the audience.
Yoko Ono
Bob and Roberta Smith - Thamesmead Codex
Judy Chicago
Mick Peter
Carolina Caycedo
Critical Evaluation (Analyses and critique of work):
What type of research and making strategies will you use in the studio to help you improve your critical
understanding of why some things you’ve made are more interesting, challenging, engaging, more
successful, satisfying.(Maximum 100 words)

I always start by doing some research, primary/secondary photos and getting an overall idea of what I'm trying to portray. Then I always try to get something on paper, either writing down ideas or the first few sketches. From those sketches, I refine my ideas by working on top of the starting sketch and putting more detail into my research. This will lead to me eventually piecing together a final piece/collection. I think the reason why my project is successful is that I try to pinpoint what I want to say in my work at the start and then work around that to create something that ties everything together where my practical painting work and research can be done simultaneously.
Professional Practice (Establishing a self–directed studio practice):
How many hours a week do you need to spend in the studio, library, gallery visits, or researching? How
many individual and group tutorials per week? What additional knowledge, skills workshops, and technical
support do you need to acquire, organise, and put in place to help realise and deliver your project? (List)

I will be spending a minimum of 4 days in the studio in a week with each day around 3/5 hours. I will be going to the library in my free time and researching will be a mixture of books and online/internet. For individual and group tutorials 1 per week will be fine. If I need more help I will reach out through email or book a tutorial in my own time.
I need the material only. Loose canvas sheets from Graham Bowes and acrylic paint set of primary colours and black and white from Hannah Gawne.
